Aivlosin® WSG now approved for use in reproducing sows

WILMINGTON, N.C. [Nov. 1, 2023] – The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Canada Veterinary Drugs Directorate have approved the use of Aivlosin® Water Soluble Granules (WSG) (62.5% w/w/ Tylvalosin as Tylvalosin Tartrate) for use in female swine intended for breeding. Producers now have a safe and effective water administration option for controlling swine respiratory disease (SRD) in reproducing sows in both the United States and Canada.

Sow longevity is an industry-wide challenge that affects an operation’s profitability. Health challenges, especially SRD, contribute greatly to mortality. Aivlosin® WSG is approved for control of SRD associated with Bordetella bronchiseptica, Haemophilus parasuis, Pasteurella multocida, Streptococcus suis and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (MHP) in groups of swine intended for slaughter and female swine intended for breeding in buildings experiencing an outbreak of SRD.

In addition to effectively fighting bacteria, Aivlosin® WSG—sold by Pharmgate Animal Health and manufactured by ECO Animal Health Group—can be administered quickly and efficiently, with the ability to treat a pen or a whole barn in a matter of minutes. It offers rapid relief so sows can feel better more quickly and focus more of their resources on reproduction.

“Most sows will continue to drink water after they have stopped eating, so using water-soluble antibiotics can provide rapid relief for multiple pathogens,” says Pharmgate Technical Service Veterinarian Dr. Jeff Okones. “Even healthy pigs consume twice as much water as feed, making water the ideal channel for delivering antibiotics.”

Aivlosin® WSG has been proven to control SRD in challenged pigs thereby ensuring optimal performance.

“While finishing pigs have felt the benefits of Aivlosin® WSG for years, now sows can, too. We are excited about how this approval from the FDA can add efficiency to a swine operation and get sows feeling better quickly,” says Okones.
